First Red Wolf Gunshot Mortality of 2014 Reported

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission are requesting assistance with an investigation involving the suspected illegal take of a radio-collared red wolf that was recently found dead. The red wolf was found with an apparent gunshot wound on Tuesday, January 7, 2014, southwest of Columbia, in Tyrrell County, North Carolina. This is the first red wolf death of 2014.

A total of 14 wild red wolves were known to have died in 2013, including three struck and killed by vehicles, one death as a result of non-management related actions, and nine confirmed or suspected gunshot deaths. [More info...]

Three conservation groups, including the Red Wolf Coalition, have filed a complaint in the U.S. District Court challenging the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission's authorization of coyote hunting in the red wolf recovery area of northeastern North Carolina. [more info]
